Rummers

Marris Antiques specialise in 18th and 19th century English and Irish glass.

The word rummer is believed to have originated from the Dutch word roemer, a distinctive form of glass made in the Low Countries at the end of the 17th Century. The word rummer has been used in England from the mid 17th Century, however, it is now commonly refers to English glasses from 1790 to about 1860 distinguished by their larger bowls and rudimentary stems. The bowls appear in a wide variety of shapes, the most common being ovoid, cup, bucket, cylindrical and straight sided. They are now generally used as wine or beer glasses with the rarer examples being sort after by collectors.
